Thursday Phonemic Awareness/Phonics Play Group is a weekly small-group session where young learners build the foundational sound skills of reading through movement and hands-on games.
Each session begins with playful phonemic awareness work done entirely by ear: children clap and tap syllables in their names, listen for rhyming pairs like "cat" and "hat," and blend sounds into words by hopping along a floor path, stretching "m-a-p" before saying "map."
From there, the group moves into phonics, connecting those sounds to letters. Children might use magnetic letters to build and change words (swapping the "c" in "cat" for an "s" to make "sat"), or "write" new letters with stick in the dirt or sand.
The group follows a structured sequence, so every activity reinforces skills in an intentional order while still feeling like play. Children might toss pinecones onto letters and say the sound each one makes, play "I Spy" with objects that begin with a target sound, or match rhyming words in various ways.
Because sessions are small, Lauren can observe how each child is progressing, offer immediate feedback, and adjust activities to meet different needs, whether a child is just learning letter sounds or is ready to blend and segment words.
Families leave each week with a simple at-home game or practice idea, such as a rhyming scavenger hunt or a quick sound-blending routine for the car, so the learning carries beyond Thursdays. More tangible resources can be found at this link.
Each session is 2 hours, 10:30am-12:30pm, and game supplies will be provided. This session can be prorated if you’d like to have your child jump in after the group has begun.
